Kitchen Cabinet Sizes: Standard Base, Wall, Tall and Corner Dimensions

Standard North American base cabinets are 876 mm (34 1/2 in) tall and 610 mm (24 in) deep, and a 38 mm (1 1/2 in) countertop brings the work surface to 914 mm (36 in). Wall cabinets are usually 305 mm (12 in) deep and hung 457 mm (18 in) above the counter. Tall pantry and oven cabinets most often come in 2,134, 2,286 and 2,438 mm (84, 90 and 96 in) heights, and widths step up in 76 mm (3 in) increments.

Every line has its own spec book, and yours has the final word. These numbers come from the books published online and from appliance installation guides. Islands, backsplash height and vanities have their own guides on our site.

Standard base cabinet sizes

Sage green Shaker base cabinets with a bank of deep drawers and brass pulls
A base cabinet is 876 mm (34 1/2 in) tall, toe kick included, and KraftMaid pairs it with a 38 mm (1 1/2 in) countertop for a 914 mm (36 in) work surface. American Woodmark’s 1951 Cabinetry guide sets the toe kick at 102 mm (4 in) high and 89 mm (3 1/2 in) back.

Standard depth is 610 mm (24 in). KraftMaid also makes 305 mm (12 in) shallow bases for tight spots and 686 mm (27 in) deep ones for larger cooktops and sinks.

Widths go up in 76 mm (3 in) steps to 1,219 mm (48 in). KraftMaid starts at 152 mm (6 in), handy for trays and spices, while the smallest door base in American Woodmark’s Woodmark guide is 229 mm (9 in). Pot and pan drawer bases in that guide come in 762, 838 and 914 mm (30, 33 and 36 in). Islands use the same boxes, and overhangs and aisles are in our kitchen island size guide.

Wall cabinet sizes and mounting height

Wall cabinets are 305 mm (12 in) deep, and KraftMaid offers 610 mm (24 in) deep units over a refrigerator for a built-in look. Widths follow the same 76 mm (3 in) steps as the bases.

Height varies most. The Woodmark guide’s full uppers come in 762, 914 and 1,067 mm (30, 36 and 42 in), with short bridge cabinets of 305 to 610 mm (12 to 24 in) for spots like the space over a fridge. KraftMaid goes as tall as 1,372 mm (54 in) for high ceilings.

The standard mounting height is 457 mm (18 in) above the counter, about 1,372 mm (54 in) off the floor. Our kitchen backsplash height guide covers when 381 mm (15 in) works and the clearances over a range.

From 1,372 mm (54 in), a 762 mm (30 in) upper tops out at 2,134 mm (84 in), a 914 mm (36 in) upper at 2,286 mm (90 in) and a 1,067 mm (42 in) upper at 2,438 mm (96 in), an 8 ft ceiling. Tall cabinets come in those same three heights, so the tops line up. For higher ceilings, read should kitchen cabinets go to the ceiling.

Tall pantry and oven cabinet sizes

Tall wood-grain cabinets with a built-in wall oven beside lit open shelves
KraftMaid’s tall pantries run from 2,134 mm (84 in) to 2,438 mm (96 in) in 76 mm (3 in) steps, 229 to 914 mm (9 to 36 in) wide. They come 305 or 610 mm (12 or 24 in) deep to line up with the cabinets beside them.

Match the pantry to the uppers so one line runs across the room. In a narrow kitchen, a 305 mm (12 in) deep pantry is worth a look, since cans get lost at the back of a deep shelf.

Oven cabinets follow the oven. GE’s 30 in built-in double wall oven needs a cut-out 724 to 727 mm (28 1/2 to 28 5/8 in) wide and lists a 762 mm (30 in) cabinet. The Woodmark guide’s double oven cabinet is 838 mm (33 in) wide. Get the oven’s model number on the drawing before ordering.

Corner cabinet sizes

A blind corner base runs partway behind the cabinet on the next wall. In the Woodmark guide, the 762 mm (30 in) version uses 991 mm (39 in) of wall with a 305 mm (12 in) door, and the 838 mm (33 in) version uses 1,067 mm (42 in) with a 381 mm (15 in) door. Each slides along the wall to fit, and Woodmark recommends a 76 mm (3 in) filler beside it so the next cabinet’s handles clear.

A lazy susan takes the same length along both walls. KraftMaid’s spec book pairs 838 mm (33 in) units with 711 mm (28 in) round shelves and 914 mm (36 in) units with 813 mm (32 in) shelves. Note that Woodmark’s 914 mm (36 in) lazy susan needs a doorway at least 813 mm (32 in) wide to get in. Our corner storage guide compares the other options.

Sink base and appliance openings

Sink bases come in 762, 838 and 914 mm (30, 33 and 36 in) widths in the Woodmark guide, but the sink decides. Blanco’s Precis 30 single-bowl sink lists a minimum cabinet size of 838 mm (33 in).

Appliance openings come from the installation guides:

  • Dishwasher: Bosch’s SHEM53Z35C needs a cut-out 610 mm (24 in) wide, 867 mm (34 1/8 in) high and 610 mm (24 in) deep. Settle the flooring first, since tile laid into the opening takes height away.
  • Range: Whirlpool’s 30 in freestanding range calls for a 762 mm (30 in) minimum opening and a 914 mm (36 in) counter.
  • Refrigerator: openings vary by model and door swing, so size them from the spec sheet.

Framed vs frameless: why the same width holds less

A framed cabinet has a solid wood face frame on the front of the box. The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) notes that framed boxes wider than about 610 mm (24 in) often need a centre stile between the doors, and that the frame’s rails take height out of each drawer. Frameless boxes can take wide drawers and roll-outs up to 914 mm (36 in), but they’re limited to full-overlay doors.

So a framed and a frameless 914 mm (36 in) drawer base won’t have the same inside dimensions, and the line’s spec book is where to check them. Our Merit vs Lectus comparison covers the rest.

Metric lines skip inches altogether. IKEA’s METOD base cabinets are 60 cm deep and 80 cm tall, in widths of 20, 30, 40, 60 and 80 cm. A 600 mm box is about 10 mm narrower than a 24 in box, so the systems don’t swap one for one.

Fillers, panels and the last few inches

Walls rarely come in 76 mm (3 in) multiples, so fillers close the gaps. The Woodmark guide lists 76 and 152 mm (3 and 6 in) fillers up to 2,438 mm (96 in) long, cut down on site. Finished end panels cover any side that shows: the end of a run, an island back, the side of a fridge.

A run ending in a stack of fillers usually means the box sizes were forced. A fully custom line like FDC Signature is built to the measured wall, which keeps fillers small. See custom vs semi-custom cabinets for where each approach fits and what kitchen cabinets cost for how sizing affects the budget.

How to measure for new cabinets

  1. Measure each wall near the floor, at counter height and near the ceiling, and use the smallest number.
  2. From one fixed corner, measure to each window, door casing, vent, outlet, water line and gas line.
  3. Measure ceiling height in several places and note bulkheads or beams.
  4. Write down appliance model numbers and download their installation guides.
  5. Measure doorways and stairs on the route in.

Rough numbers are fine for a first layout. Order from a site measure.

Frequently asked questions

How deep are kitchen base cabinets?

Standard base boxes are 610 mm (24 in) deep. Some lines also make 305 mm (12 in) shallow bases and 686 mm (27 in) deep ones.

How high should upper cabinets be above the counter?

The usual gap is 457 mm (18 in), which puts the bottom of the uppers about 1,372 mm (54 in) above the floor. Our backsplash height guide covers when a smaller gap works.

What size cabinet does a 30 in sink need?

Check the sink’s spec sheet. Blanco’s Precis 30 needs at least an 838 mm (33 in) cabinet.

Are European cabinets a different size?

Often, yes. Metric lines such as IKEA’s METOD use 60 cm deep boxes in widths like 40, 60 and 80 cm, while North American lines step in 3 in increments. Plan in one system and convert at the end.
