Kitchen Remodeling

Kitchen remodeling is exciting. Few things bring more vitality and excitement to a home.

There are different scales of remodeling. Some people choose to simply switch out a countertop, while others choose to rebuild the room from scratch. Often, people find that one fix ends up necessitating another fix, which necessitates another fix and quickly becomes overwhelming. Final Draft Cabinetry can help you sort things out and get the work done right.

Why Final Draft Cabinetry?

Final Draft Cabinetry is a family owned and family operated business that believes in maintaining the old-fashioned, human touch. We are big enough to have resources for any job but still small enough that we can give full care and attention to each of our clients. We like it that way. Modern technology is great, but we still believe that face-to-face interaction is the best way to understand our customers’ needs. We pride ourselves on being Vancouver’s premier kitchen renovation experts.

Owner/operator Fred Felty is an Exclusive Authorized Dealer for Merit Kitchens. Before starting Final Draft Cabinetry, he installed over 1,200 kitchens with his previous business, CTI Industries. Kitchen Renovation Process

Every kitchen remodeling job is different, but they all follow the same general process. That process goes like this:

  1. Design/Plan: This is when homeowners work with an interior designer (in this case of Final Draft Cabinetry, Daniela Sodero-Felty) to come up with a good custom concept and to plan how that concept will be realized.
  2. Prep: Before new stuff can be added, we need to clear the old stuff away. The old room will be torn out to make way for the new.
  3. Rebuilding plumbing and electrical wiring: This is work mostly done in the walls, so it needs to be handled before any of the external, aesthetic items. This work will require a kitchen renovation contractor that specializes in plumbing or electrical, and we can help you find a good provider.
  4. Inspections: This won’t always be required, but in most instances there will be professional health and safety inspections for plumbing and electrical work.
  5. Wall finishing: After inspections are completed, new walls are built over the wiring and plumbing.
  6. Door and window installation: If required, this is when a contractor installs doors and windows into your new room.
  7. Floor installation: If required, floor installation can happen at a couple different places in the process, but commonly it’s done at this stage.
  8. Refacing: With the “guts” of the room done, the cabinetry, countertops, faucets, and fixtures will be installed. This is often people’s favorite stage because this is the pretty, outward-facing stuff that most people chose to remodel for in the first place.
  9. Appliance installation: Lastly, the old appliances will be put back in their places or new ones will be installed.

With that, the kitchen remodel is complete. Not every job will require each of those phases, but they all follow the same general path.

Do you have any questions?

What questions should I ask before remodeling my kitchen?

First of all, figure out what your budget range is and work backwards from that. Every change you elect to make has the possibility of provoking another change, and things can quickly run out of control if you don’t start with a solid budget in mind. Once you know your budget, figure out the most important item or items—these are the central things that have you wanting to remodel. Once you determine how much budget is left over from that, you can start thinking about the smaller stuff.

Also, think about unintended consequences of each change you want to make. A new countertop could mean you need new plumbing. New lighting fixtures could mean you need new electrical wiring.

What will the weather be like, and how could that affect the work? How much time will your cooking area be out of commission and are you set up for that?

What time of year is the best time to remodel my kitchen?

The most important thing here is figuring out when you want the work done by. If you’re hoping to get things done for Christmas, for instance, you’ll want to be in the design phase by August or September.

How long does a kitchen renovation take?

This varies widely depending on the size of your room and the extent of your renovations, but some good guidelines are:

  • 6 to 8 weeks for the average kitchen remodel
  • 3 to 5 months for wall-to-wall renovation
  • 10 to 12 weeks for large cooking area
  • 2 to 4 weeks for small remodels

The numbers provided above are rough guidelines from which to start. The exact timeframe is going to depend on your unique situation.
